03 aout 2012 – Hier, le coup d’envoi du plus gros festival de musique rock à Montréal était lancé. Prêts pour 3 jours intenses de musique, nous entrions dans l’antre d’Osheaga sur l’île Jean Drapeau*.
Presque 18h, les excellents Franz Ferdinand déploient leur rock rythmé habituel, à grands coups de batterie et de beats disco des années 80. Réjouissant les fidèles avec Can’t Stop Feeling poussé à son maximum et transformé, pour le plus grand plaisir de tous, en une superbe reprise rock psychédélique d’I Feel Love de Donna Summer. Un magnifique hommage dansant à la Queen of disco décédée plus tôt ce printemps. Suivi du célébrissime tube qui les lança, Take Me Out. Dès les premières notes, les cris fusent, les bras se lèvent, l’attention est captée. Sur toutes les lèvres: “I say you don’t show. Don’t move, time is slow. I say… take me out!!”
Un beau moment.
Le groupe, emporté par la liesse finit plus tard son show sur un solo de batterie absolument électrisant, une marche festive frôlant avec la house, dans un dialogue avec la foule qui répond par les cris. Autre très beau moment de musique. Pendant ce temps, les lances à incendie s’activent pour rafraîchir le public. Quelques remerciements, et les premières notes de This Fire se font entendre. Il est temps de dire au revoir: ”Osheaga merci mon ami, bon voyage mon ami, bon voyage!” scande Alex Kapranos au micro.

Osheaga 2012 – un beau début de festival

A peine le temps de tourner la tête que The Weeknd déclenchent leurs guitares. En un quart de seconde, on change de registre, la voix onctueuse d’Abel Tesfaye, tout de noir vêtu, lunettes noires et veste treillis, les deux mains sur le micro, affole la jeune gent féminine. Révélation Web de l’année 2011, The Weeknd est devenu en un rien de temps la coqueluche des stars et des médias, qui chuchotent le nom comme un secret qu’on souhaite partager au plus grand nombre. Le nom fait boule de neige, et va jusqu’à être désigné par le Vogue français comme “le futur sexy du R’n’B”.
On ne peut qu’acquiescer en entendant le Canadien poser sa voix douce d’adolescent sur les beats lourds propulsés par ces grosses basses à en faire vibrer le corps et le cœur. Le public est conquis, certains ont même apporté des panneaux à l’effigie de The Weeknd et un peu partout la jeune génération danse dans cette atmosphère pesante. Car si de R’n’B il s’agit, nous sommes loin de la sauce légère et sensuelle des autres Usher et Cie. The Weeknd propose une musique contrastée entre une fausse douceur rendue presque froide par la lenteur et la profondeur des beats, des lyrics crus, sans dentelles et fioritures. Un genre renouvelé en somme. Et une très belle découverte.
Pendant ce temps, au fond des bois, sur la scène du Piknik, c’est le gros party. Crazy B, Little Mike, DJ Need et DJ Pone, les quatre frenchys de Birdy Nam Nam se donnent aux platines. De la grosse électro psychédélique, sur laquelle le public se déchaîne, certains sont montés sur les tables, d’autres sur les barrières. L’ambiance est clairement au rendez-vous de ce côté de l’île.
Place à la fête désinhibée, certains t-shirts tombent, les maillots dandinent, bras levés.
Je resterais bien me mêler à la foule mais il est déjà l’heure de retourner sur le parterre principal. Un ange s’apprête à chanter. Et je ne veux pas manquer ça.

Florence + The Machine, tant attendue, fait irruption dans sa longue robe de voile noir. Un ange noir et feu s’est posé. Le spectacle commence doucement, avec une certaine réserve presque, malgré tout sous les cris du public, visiblement déjà enrôlé. La harpe, la batterie et les guitares prennent possession de la scène. Aérienne et humble, Florence Welch, salue son public, un grand sourire aux lèvres. S’il faut attendre un bon vingt minutes avant que le spectacle ne décolle véritablement, et que les balances soient faites, laissant enfin vivre la belle voix de la chanteuse, dès Cosmic Love, l’enchantement prend.
La foule, même au fond sur la colline est atteinte. C’est que Florence Welch sait y faire. “On veut voir autant de personnes hissées sur les épaules que possible!” demande-t-elle au public, plus tard ce sera de faire un hug à son voisin, ce que des milliers de personnes s’empressent de faire. “Ils sont où les mecs mignons??!” entend-on. “Express yourselves!” ordonne-t-elle cette fois, une fille à mes côtés lève sa jambe de danseuse.
Le concert se poursuit crescendo, avec l’excellent nouveau titre Spectrum (Say My Name), sur lequel Florence Welch se déchaîne. Jusqu’à nous faire littéralement quitter la terre foulée pour les cieux. Le soleil se couche doucement sur Osheaga, le ciel se teinte d’une douceur jaune doré.
L’instant est magique, tandis que Florence Welch, de sa voix envoûtante déployée à pleins poumons distille son Never Let Me Go. On poursuit dans la magie avec Shake It Out. Les portables se lèvent un peu partout pour saisir l’instant, les back vocals mêlent leur voix, la batterie se veut discrète, la robe de Florence vole au vent et sa voix porte certainement jusqu’aux tréfonds de l’île. Magnifique. En toute volupté et grâce. Instant qui bascule en un rien de temps, nous prenant tous par surprise en un remix festif, le parterre principal se transforme en dancefloor.
Avant de finir avec son célèbre et prenant Dog Days Are Over. “Happiness, hit her like a train on a track. Coming towards her, stuck still no turning back” …les tambourins sont sortis. Et la foule de continuer à danser. Déjà fini?
Une heure vient de passer en un coup de vent.
L’ange repart.

Sur la scène à côté Sigur Ros s’installe et commence son spectacle. Sa voix de castra fend l’atmosphère. La foule se partage en deux. Certains resteront à relaxer sur les pelouses artificielles, certains s’endormiront même, d’autres profiteront de la douceur aérienne de Sigur Ros pour enchaîner quelques poses de yoga, sous les arbres.
L’instant est à la réflexion et la méditation. Une bulle de douceur après les émotions de la journée, et la frénésie de la foule.
Aucun contact avec le public, Sigur Ros est dans son monde, atmosphérique et planant. Entraînant son public avec lui, tel un gourou. Tandis que la seconde moitié de la foule, moi compris, se dépêche déjà de rejoindre le bout de l’île, en tenant de se frayer un chemin à travers la masse compacte en marche. On passe dans les bois où l’atmosphère semble quasi irréelle. La lumière bleue, verte se propage dans l’obscurité des arbres.
On se croirait dans un film de science-fiction.
Puis on passe la passerelle tremblante au-dessus de la route pour enfin, rejoindre la scène verte.

MGMT est déjà sur scène. La scène verte, nouvel ajout de l’édition 2012 d’Osheaga, est au cœur d’une cuvette, idéal pour tout voir, même de loin, et pour que le son se diffuse de façon homogène. Il fait nuit mais l’équipe du festival lance au public des bâtons fluos lumineux, bleus et verts. Sur scène, la situation est pour le moins déconcertante.
La musique est bonne, mais la voix d’Andrew VanWyngarden est décousue, fausse par moment, fluette comme un adolescent de 15 ans. D’ailleurs, pour être tout à fait honnête, on n’a pas vraiment l’impression d’assister à un concert de l’envergure de MGMT, dont je suis, pour rappel, une fan absolue (du moins de leurs deux premiers albums, le 3e m’ayant laissée un peu dubitative…).
On a davantage l’impression d’assister à la répétition d’un band d’ados dans le garage de leurs parents. Les titres s’enchaînent de façon étrange et décousue, la plupart des titres, tirés de leur dernier album convainquent aussi peu que leur disque la critique à sa sortie. A croire qu’ils essaient de le passer en force, quitte à ne pas prendre en compte leur public. Aucun échange là non plus. Comme Sigur Ros, les ados pré-pubères (pourtant ils ne le sont plus…) sont murés dans leur musique.
Heureusement, ils offrent au public, comme une surprise, Time To Pretend. Une surprise que le public leur rend bien, le temps de quelques minutes la scène verte est en transe.
Rien que pour ce morceau je ne regrette pas d’être venue tant le bonheur de l’entendre joué comme ça, à plein volume, est immense. Mais pour le reste, on repassera. Je patiente encore trois chansons, pour être tout à fait sûre.
Insipide.
Je préfère passer mon chemin et rejoindre Sigur Ros, qui finit avec grâce son set.

21h35. Il fait désormais nuit noire à Osheaga. La scène de la rivière, sur la gauche, s’illumine. Justice prend place. Le temps d’inspirer, avant de se prendre, en pleine face, une vague électro puissante. Justice est bien là. Xavier de Rosnay, le petit, et Gaspard Augé, le grand, caché derrière sa massive tignasse frisée, bougent à peine, pas un mot non plus au public, regard distant et attitude scénique forcée. Dommage, mais le courant semble passer malgré tout et il se diffuse à travers la foule comme une nuée de poudre de dynamite.
Terminée la sieste, place à la fête. Osheaga se transforme en club géant. Tout le monde danse. Impossible de résister tant l’excitation est à son comble. Du bon son électro house, puissant, enrichi d’influences pop rock 70′s. C’est bon, très bon même. Face à la grande croix lumineuse posée sur la scène, nous nous prosternons, et dansons, sans plus réfléchir à quoi que ce soit.
La messe musicale est dite. Le duo envoie plusieurs anciens titres lourds comme Civilization ou l’éclatant D.A.N.C.E, sur lequel Gaspard Augé passe au clavier et quelques titres plus récents dont Audio, Video, Disco.

Au bout de trois-quart d’heure de show, je ne saurais dire pourquoi, peut-être justement parce que, dans un concert, si la musique compte, la relation aux artistes aussi, le manque d’échange a raison de moi. Et l’entrain commence à se dissiper. Inutile de gâcher le plaisir. Il est temps de prendre le chemin du métro.
