04 août 2019 – L’été à Montréal ne serait pas le même sans la multitude de festivals que l’on a la chance d’avoir en ville. Et le festival phare de tous les amoureux de musique (et de wanna be famous sur Instagram) est certainement Osheaga!
Pendant une fin de semaine de trois jours, toute l’énergie de la métropole se tourne vers le parc Jean Drapeau pour offrir un événement riche en expériences auditive.
Pour cette 14eme édition de Osheaga, le festival avait une programmation encore très variée, avec toutefois une forte connotation rap, ce qui n’était pas pour déplaire à bon nombre de festivaliers! En plus, la météo de ce weekend aura été particulièrement ensoleillée, ce qui a permis de passer un excellent moment avec tous ces artistes internationaux venus faire vibrer la plus grande ville du Québec.
Je n’en était pas à mon premier festival, ayant eu la chance de couvrir en tant que photographe les éditions 2011, 2012 et 2015. Mais pour la première fois je suis venu simplement assister au festival pour apprécier l’expérience, avec une population qui me rappel que les années passent et que la moyenne d’âge des autres festivaliers est toujours aussi jeune (et que les gens font preuve d’une grande imagination pour se vêtir avec des tenues que l’on ne voit qu’à Osheaga!)

Première journée de cette édition 2019 du festival Osheaga, il fait déjà très chaud et les festivaliers sont nombreux. J’ai la chance de partager le festival avec mon frère qui est de passage à Montréal pour fêter ses 18 ans! Plutôt sympa comme endroit pour faire son anniversaire!
Grand fan de rap, il m’a déjà fait la programmation complète des trois prochains jours, avec la liste des artistes qu’il veut aller voir. Je vais le suivre, car je ne connais pratiquement aucun des chanteurs de cette édition du festival (j’ai dit que je me faisais vieux?).
Nous voila donc en plein milieu de la foule, pour commencer très fort avec Denzel Curry! Ça donne du coude, ça se bouscule, il n’est même pas 15h et Osheaga commence très fort! Au milieu de cette moiteur estivale, nous voila asperger par les lances à eau, entre poussière et débardeurs trempés.
On fait le tour des scènes, en passant par la passerelle qui mène aux deuxième site du festival, afin d’assister au concert de Gunna. (je retiendrai de ce concert la chanson Speed It up et ces… 5 mots: Hold on, hold on, speed it up, hold on!)
On prend du bon temps, avec ce soleil qui illumine le parc Jean Drapeau. De retour sur les scènes principales, on prend une poutine au passage, le temps d’écouter la « performance » plutôt loufoque de Flume et on attend le concert de The Lumineers.
La tête d’affiche de ce premier d’Osheaga 2019 donne une excellente performance, avec une partie du concert en haut d’une plateforme au milieu de la foule!

Pour la deuxième journée à Osheaga 2019, s’il ne fallait retenir qu’un seul des concerts, ce serait sans aucun doute celui de Logic ! Un excellent show, qui aurait très bien pu être une tête d’affiche. Le public était très réceptif au chanteur qui se démenait sur scène tel les plus grands.
Mémorable!
Dans l’après-midi, le joyeux Bas a fait un petit concert fort sympathique, à la fin duquel nous étions complètement trempés! On a fini par séché en profitant des marches au soleil, à écouter l’ambiance de Osheaga et à regarder le défilé de costumes des festivaliers, avec au fond, Montréal et le fleuve St-Laurent.
Le reste de la journée a été assez tranquille, avec quelques belles découvertes mais aussi un constat désagréable: le son lors du concert de Janelle Monae était tout simplement pourri… Mais que font les ingés son? Depuis le haut de la colline en haut des deux scènes principales, on ne pouvait pas du tout apprécier à sa juste valeur cette chanteuse à cause d’une saturation du son vraiment désagréable.

Dernière journée de festival, la fatigue se fait sentir après deux jours debout en plein soleil. Mais il reste le concert que l’on attendait le plus en fin de soirée. Nous avons pris notre temps, en nous promenant de scène en scène, et en dégustant des tacos aux jardins YUL eat, l’expérience gastronomique de Osheaga 2019.
Nous avons attendu plusieurs heures debout, pour être bien placé afin d’assister à la performance, que dis je, le film grandeur nature, de la tête d’affiche du jour: Childish Gambino. Le chanteur nous a offert le plus grand show de toute la fin de semaine, se mettant en scène dans 1h30 de mouvements tout simplement incroyables. On voit qu’il n’est pas acteur pour rien!
Tantôt sur une plateforme, tantôt dans la foule à troller les jeunes en se prenant en selfie avec leur cellulaire, ou encore à emprunter un joint (« weed is legal in Canada, isn’t it? »), il n’a pas arrêté de surprendre les festivaliers qui ne faisaient qu’en redemander. L’artiste a enchaîné ses grands titres de This is america ou encore Feels like summer en nous montrant qu’il savait bouger, et nous faire bouger.
Et comment oublier la mémorable Redbone qui à elle toute seule pourrait résumer une édition 2019 vraiment réussit!
Le show s’est terminé avec un feux d’artifices, pour clôturer une nouvelle édition d’Osheaga. Une nouvelle occasion de montrer à quel point Montréal reste la référence des festivals!
Que l’on aime ou non le style de musique et le type de festivaliers qui viennent chaque année plus nombreux se déhancher au parc Jean Drapeau, on ne pourra pas le nier: Osheaga est définitivement The place to be au milieu de l’été!
