Pour célébrer les 375 ans de la ville de Montréal (Montréal 375), je voulais réaliser un projet photo qui mettrait à l’honneur l’architecture de ma ville d’adoption, tout en partageant l’aspect culturel montréalais, si caractéristique et reconnu partout sur la planète. Ne dit-on pas de Montréal qu’elle est la ville des festivals ?
J’ai donc décidé de mélanger urbanisme et danse classique, en rendant hommage à un endroit iconique de cette métropole : son métro.
L’objectif était d’avoir un projet avec des talents montréalais, qui ferait ressortir les stations de métro que l’on arpente tous les jours mais qu’on ne prend pas forcément la peine de regarder. 4 lignes, 4 couleurs, 4 danseuses, il ne restait plus qu’à construire autour de cette idée.

Le projet Montréal 375 devait permettre de parcourir chacune des lignes de métro (heureusement, il n’y en a que 4) en une soirée chacune. J’avais déjà repéré certaines stations plus intéressantes visuellement et qui offraient un éclairage suffisant pour faire de bonnes images.
Pour chaque ligne, j’ai retenu une danseuse récemment diplômée de l’École Supérieure de Ballet du Québec (ESBQ) , dont trois d’entre elles avec qui j’avais déjà collaboré par le passé. En ordre de prise de vue, nous retrouvons:
- sur la ligne bleu : Sarah-Maude Laliberté, toujours pétillante et souriante;
- sur la ligne jaune : Catherine Toupin, la seule que je ne connaissais pas encore, et qui a fait preuve d’un grand professionnalisme tout au long de la soirée;
- sur la ligne verte : Pauline Gervais qui, du haut de ses 6″ fait preuve d’un dynamisme et d’une force incroyable;
- sur la ligne orange : Pénélope Abram, d’un tempérament très doux et très attentive à sa technique.
Pour chaque ligne, une danseuse avec un juste-au-corps sur mesure, réalisé par une couturière montréalaise, qui est aussi danseuse aux Grands Ballets Canadien: Sarah Maira. Elle a réussi à trouver exactement les bonnes couleurs et a réalisé un travail de grande qualité en me proposant un design original et recherché, notamment pour le dos des leotards.
Une fois les danseuses, les costumes et les stations validés, il me restait à répondre à une question:
Est-ce autorisé de faire des photos dans le métro?
Plusieurs recherches ont été nécessaires afin de valider qu’il était bien possible de faire des photos dans le métro en question. J’ai finalement contacté le service des communications de la STM, et j’ai rapidement découvert que si je n’utilisais qu’un appareil, sans trépied et sans flash, il était tout à fait possible de faire des images, sans autorisation particulière!
Afin d’éviter un trop fort achalandage dans le métro, j’avais prévu de faire les séances le jeudi soir. Est-ce que c’était la meilleure des options? Aucune idée, mais nous avons été assez chanceux car en général il n’y avait pas foule sur les lignes. Nous avons eu le droit à quelques sourcils froncés, parfois quelques regards amusés et bien sur, une bonne quantité de photos volées au téléphone par des passants curieux :-).
Mention spéciale sur la ligne jaune à un homme en costard cravate qui a réalisé un reportage complet en tournant autour de Catherine, sans aucune discrétion, et à la madame de la ligne orange qui nous a filmé pendant une bonne dizaine de minutes.
Au cours de chaque soirée, nous avons pris près de 400 photos! Le tri a été particulièrement difficile, afin de sélectionner les photos les plus marquantes, mais surtout les plus parfaites d’un point de vue technique. Car autant un photographe peut être tatillon sur l’éclairage et le cadrage de l’image, autant les danseurs sont les juges les plus sévères sur la position de leurs mains et de leurs pieds.

Une fois le projet Montréal 375 terminé, il me restait une dernière idée derrière la tête… Obtenir une publication dans un des journaux de la ville. Et pourquoi pas le journal Métro lui même ? Je me suis mis à la recherche du bon journaliste qui serait ouvert à écouter mon histoire, et peut-être me publier.
C’est ainsi que je suis entré en contact avec Natalia Wysocka, journaliste à la culture pour le journal Métro Montréal, qui a eu la gentillesse de m’interviewer et qui a accepté très rapidement de partager ces images dans l’édition culture du vendredi.
Je n’en revenais pas!
Un mois après avoir pris les images, j’allais retrouver un article dans le premier quotidien gratuit de la ville. Et quel article: la une du journal en plus d’une double page !
Juste avant le temps des fêtes, je ne pouvais espérer meilleur cadeau de Noël.

Pour le matériel, n’étant pas autorisé à utiliser ni flash, ni trépied, il a fallu s’assurer de travailler avec des objectifs particulièrement lumineux. La danse nécessitant de saisir un mouvement relativement rapide, il fallait que je m’assure d’avoir autant que possible des vitesses d’obturations élevées.
J’ai donc réalisé l’ensemble des images avec deux objectifs fixes: une 50mm f/1.8 et une 85mm f/1.4 . Heureusement que mon boitier me permet de monter assez en ISO sans trop dégrader la qualité d’image.Avec peu de matériel dans le sac, j’ai pu me déplacer rapidement et nous avons gagné en flexibilité pour changer de station de métro ou carrément rentrer dans un wagon à la dernière minute.
Si c’était à refaire, j’aimerais avoir un flash, pour descendre un peu mes ISO et ainsi réduire le bruit dans l’image mais il faudrait à ce moment-là des autorisations de la STM.
Cette série d’images aura connu un vif succès et j’espère qu’elle plaira à tous les montréalais de cœur. Peut-être est-ce le début d’une série plus générale de danse classique dans les métros d’ici et d’ailleurs?
